The Shields Elevator was built in 1948. It was expanded from its original licensed storage capacity of 668,000 bushels to 1,477,000 bushels in 2011 with the addition of four new bins.
The Shields Elevator became a part of the Garden City Co-op on April 1, 2005 when the Farmers Cooperative Elevator and Mercantile Association of Dighton merged with the Garden City Co-op.
