Gone to the Birds

If you are driving on Hwy 23, approximately 2 miles south of Dighton, you will start to see what appear to be very large nests perched upon telephone poles. It is one of those objects you may ask, “What in the world is that”? It is just that. Two man made Raptor Nests. Raptors are a predatory bird. In other words, birds with hooked beaks that prey.

This is the vision of Gerald Fay. He farms in central Lane County and has placed these nests strategically by his farmstead which is located 3 miles south of Dighton. There you will find a live spring and creek that run close to the nests. These nests are made of 8 foot white oak 4x4’s and green Cyprus branches intertwined and stand 30’ from ground to scaffold.

These nests are just part of what Gerald calls the “Western Ks Oasis Restoration”. It was important to Gerald’s father in law, Herb Hineman, to leave this place in better condition than he found it and has chosen to honor his legacy in this manner.

Gerald is uncertain what species of bird will make this their landing, temporary home or in some cases, take up permanent residence, but is excited to see how it impacts the bird population and possibly remove some of the rodents that populate the area.

Gerald had relatives who assisted in the construction of these nests. He also had Lane-Scott Electric assist him in the placement of them. Lane-Scott also generously donated the poles.

Gerald states;
Conversation with my Mom at coffee…

“Mom, I need to prepare you…

(Mom) “For what”?

(Gerald) “There will be some who would ask as to what your crazy son is up to now. I would be obliged if you would tell them…you have no idea as you do not have a crazy son”!
